π₯ Biochar Production, Testing & Application
A complete practical guide for project owners β from raw feedstock to certified, field-applied EBC/IBI biochar that generates verifiable carbon credits.
β THE PROBLEM TODAY
Most biochar operators produce biochar with no quality testing, no chain of custody records, and no IBI/EBC certification β meaning their carbon credits are rejected or heavily discounted by buyers and registries.
β WHAT THIS COURSE TEACHES
How to produce EBC Class A biochar, conduct IBI stability testing, create a full chain of custody from feedstock to field, and register your biochar batches on Verdini for permanent carbon credit evidence.
βοΈ The 8-Stage Biochar Production Process
1
Feedstock Selection & Preparation
Choose the right organic material: agricultural residues (rice husks, corn cobs, sugarcane bagasse), woody biomass (timber offcuts, nut shells), or animal manure. EBC Class A feedstocks must be traceable, non-contaminated, and have moisture content below 30%. Common mistake: using contaminated urban waste β EBC rejection.
2
Pyrolysis Process β Temperature Control
Heat feedstock in oxygen-limited conditions (pyrolysis) at 400β700Β°C. Higher temperatures = higher stability (lower H/C ratio) = higher EBC class. Slow pyrolysis (1β3h) produces more biochar. Fast pyrolysis produces more bio-oil. Target: 550β650Β°C for EBC Class A (H/C β€ 0.4).
3
Quality Control β IBI/EBC Laboratory Testing
Send samples to accredited lab (EBC-certified). Test: Total carbon content (β₯50% for EBC Class A), H/C molar ratio (β€0.4), surface area (BET), pH, ash content, heavy metals (Pb, Cd, Ni, Cr, As, Hg β all below EBC limits). Result turnaround: 3β10 business days. Budget $300β800/test.
4
Batch Registration & Chain of Custody
Log every batch in Verdini Biochar Tracker: feedstock origin, production date, kiln temperature profile, weight output, and lab certificate. Each batch gets a unique hash-signed certificate (BCH-[YEAR]-[SEQ]). This creates the tamper-proof audit trail required by Puro.earth and EBC registries.
5
Pre-Application Soil Testing
Before applying biochar, record baseline soil pH, organic carbon (%), nitrogen content, and heavy metal baseline. This creates the "before" state for NDVI comparison and satisfies Ghana EPA / EU ETS soil monitoring requirements. Use Verdini sensor integration for automated, continuous soil monitoring.
6
Field Application β Rates & Methods
Standard application: 5β25 t/ha (higher rates for severely degraded soils). Mix biochar with compost or liquid fertilizer before application to improve plant uptake. Incorporate into topsoil 10β20cm. GPS-log all application routes using Verdini fleet tracking. Optimal: apply before planting season or first rains.
7
Post-Application Monitoring (Sentinel-2)
Verdini automatically processes Sentinel-2 satellite passes (every 5β12 days) and calculates NDVI change vs. your baseline. Look for vegetation index improvement within 3β6 months of application. Document NDVI improvement, soil carbon increase, and yield data for carbon credit calculation.
8
Carbon Credit Registration & Market Listing
Submit evidence package (lab certs + Verdini monitoring reports + satellite data) to your chosen registry: EBC/Puro.earth for biochar-specific credits, or Verra VCS / Gold Standard for broader soil carbon. Credits are issued per tonne of COβ permanently sequestered. 1 tonne biochar carbon β 3.7 tCOβe (EBC calculation method).

How Sentinel-2 works, what NDVI means for your project, and how to read Verdini's change detection outputs to verify restoration progress.
π°οΈ How Sentinel-2 Works
ESA's Sentinel-2 satellite passes every 5β12 days at 10m resolution. It captures 13 spectral bands including red, near-infrared (NIR), and shortwave infrared (SWIR). Verdini automatically downloads each pass, clips it to your AOI, and runs NDVI calculation β no manual work required.
π What NDVI Tells You
NDVI < 0.2Bare soil / dead vegetation
NDVI 0.2β0.4Sparse / recovering
NDVI 0.4β0.6Healthy vegetation
NDVI > 0.6Dense forest / high biomass

π Carbon Certification Standards
9 major standards compared. Choose the right framework for your project type, region, and buyer market.
π
Verra VCS
Global Β· Most widely used
The gold standard for voluntary carbon markets. Applicable to forests, wetlands, agriculture, and biochar projects globally. 30-year crediting periods.
European Biochar Certificate. The definitive standard for biochar carbon removal. Class A: 100-year permanence factor. Puro.earth marketplace handles credit trading.
The leading standard for Middle East, Africa, and Asia markets. Backed by the UNFCCC Paris Agreement architecture. Competitive fees and growing buyer network in Gulf states.
The oldest voluntary carbon standard in the US (est. 1996). Accepted by CARB and US federal programs. Strong for US buyers, forest, and agricultural soil projects.
Designed specifically for smallholder farmers and community-based projects in Africa and Asia. Lower fees, community benefit requirements, and strong social co-benefit scoring.
EU Emissions Trading Scheme + Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism. Compliance market β highest prices but requires EU project location or approved methodology. Growing in scope.
The ISO framework for project-level GHG quantification. Not a trading standard itself β used as the methodological backbone for corporate commitments and bilateral carbon agreements.
Drones provide 200Γ better resolution than satellites (2cm vs 10m). Essential for high-value investor verification, grant reporting, and detailed analysis.
